SID VALE ASSOCIATION

BIRTH OF THE MUSEUM

2020 marked the 70th anniversary of Sidmouth Museum...

In 1950 Miss M Kilgour invited the Sid Vale Association to take over a collection of exhibits for which she had shared responsibility with Miss Leigh Browne and Lady Lockyer.

Opening initially at Woolcombe House (now the town council premises), the SVA then moved the museum to its current premises in Hope Cottage in 1970, and has gradually built up annual visitor numbers from 5,000 up to now 13,000.

Sidmouth Museum is run by the Sid Vale Association, one of the first Civic Societies in Britain, founded in 1846.
