About our digitised books...

Some of the collections we hold cannot be exhibited for reasons of practicablility, either because they are too fragile or we simply do not have enough space available. Digitisation allows us to make some of these accessible with viewing at the museum on TV screens and in some cases via the Internet. The Museum is undertaking a programme of digitisation as funds and grants become available.

In 2021 the Museum entered a new phase in the programme with the digitisation of books, beginning with SHINGLE by John Tindall over 4,000 pages of almost daily records and research into the changing foreshore of Sidmouth from 1922-1931. Hand typed text, illustrated with photos, sketches, graphs and tables. A snapshot in time - ten years of life and conditions in Sidmouth 100 years ago.
