This guide will be helpful to visitors to the Sid Valley and, also, to those who have recently moved to the area. Long-standing residents may discover more about our remarkable variety and quality of buildings..
A major consideration when making my selection was whether the site can be easily seen from the pavement or lane.
Despite Sidmouth’s Regency legacy, Victorian houses and terraces far outnumber them. Two Victorian Gothic Revival style buildings are included - the extraordinary Old Chancel, Peter Orlando Hutchinson’s creation, and the Chapels of Rest in the municipal cemetery. By chance, his grave is close by.
In the early 20th century, a renaissance of imaginative new building took place often, but not exclusively, designed by RW Sampson (1866-1950) and which encompassed varied styles. The fine Post Office,1938, is the most ‘modern’ property. Glenside, 2011, and the new entrances to the Methodist Church and Woolcombe House (Town Council), both 2007, are impressive. Several of the 1970s apartment blocks are notable but notably awful.
The maps show all the sites, based on post code.
