In late summer 1931 there was an announcement from the Palace that the Duke of Connaught would be staying in the town for at least the three months winter season, this propelled Sidmouth into the limelight where it stayed for the next four years.
Duke of Connaught 426 days in Sidmouth is not fiction but the reader may be forgiven for thinking that the press were reporting on a British Period Drama. At the time there was extensive regional and national press coverage of the Duke's visits. The articles, reports and photographs together with your own imagination will take you back to the 1930s to a charming period in Sidmouth's history.
The Duke of Connaught is the main character, supported by other royals, local gentry, councillors, tradesmen and the inhabitants of Sidmouth and the Sid Valley. Most of the action takes place in Sidmouth and the surrounding area of East Devon, with references to London and Europe. The language and grammar is of the period, you will note that the 1930s reporters made mistakes as they still do today. There were no television cameras, reporting had to be very descriptive to make it is easy for the reader to imagine the scene and they certainly succeeded.
